me | ask

I was reminiscing on my last year of high school the other day. There was a question I was asking myself that really got me thinking, that question being, “How would my last year of high school have changed, had I not joined my school’s Gay/Straight Alliance? I don’t think there would’ve been many differences. The only main ones I know is obvious is that I would’ve never met the kids in the GSA, I would have never gone to the True Colors conference (the largest LGBT youth conference in the nation). There wasn’t anyone saying that because I was a gay kid in high school that I needed to join GSA. I knew of many other LGBT individuals that were “out” in school that didn’t want or feel the need to join the club. Something makes me think (and I know this sounds stupid, but whatever) I wouldn’t be as flamboyant and aware of the gay scene as I currently am. I know for sure that I wouldn’t be educated on my gay history, nor would I probably care that much. I probably wouldn’t have joined my college’s Queer/Straight Alliance either. Basically, what this seems to be boiling down to is that I wouldn’t have gone to certain LGBT-oriented trips, I would not have met a few people, and I would be a lot more reserved. Hmmm… If I could go back in time, I would try not joining GSA at all, just to see all of the noticeable changes.
